Does your organization have a potential role overseas?
Does your organization have a potential role overseas? In the 2nd edition of The Complete Guide to Nonprofit Management, Smith, Bucklin & Associates, Inc. provides a list of questions to ask when you're considering "going international." The paraphrased list includes:
- Are people from other countries regularly visiting your website, requesting information, or attending your conferences, trainings, or seminars?
- Is there a significant market opportunity for the products or services that your organization offers? What about the information that you produce?
- Does your mission include shaping global attitudes or helping citizens from other countries build a better society?
- Are scientists, researchers, or professionals in other countries contributing knowledge that should be shared within your organization?
- Does your team have research, data, or other information that should be better known elsewhere? (6) Are there potential partner organizations overseas with whom you could work?
- Do you have the financial and human resources to invest in additional research, travel, and exploratory meetings that will probably not generate revenue or support themselves for the first few years? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you may want to consider moving forward with some initial international activities to demonstrate success.
